Instances of irritability, hostility, and intrusive thoughts have been reported during discontinuation of alprazolam in patients with posttraumatic stress disorder. Early morning anxiety and emergence of anxiety symptoms between doses of XANAX have been reported in patients with panic disorder taking prescribed maintenance doses. These symptoms may reflect the development of tolerance or a time interval between doses which is longer than the duration of clinical action of the administered dose. Alprazolam is a member of the benzodiazepine family, which are sedatives that cause dose-related depression of the central nervous system. Both drugs are benzodiazepines that help calm the body. Inform patients that in some cases, patients taking benzodiazepines have developed a protracted withdrawal syndrome with withdrawal symptoms lasting weeks to more than 12 months.

Perhaps even more unusual is that the withdrawal symptoms may also come and go over time after you stop taking the medicine. Do not take this medication if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. There is an increased risk of respiratory problems and muscular weakness in your baby. Xanax may appear in breast milk and could affect a nursing infant. If this medication is essential to your health, your doctor may advise you to stop breastfeeding until your treatment with this medication is finished. If you are being treated for panic disorder, you may need to take a higher dose of Xanax than for anxiety alone.

If you breastfeed while taking this medication, seek medical care right away if you notice the child has slow or noisy breathing, is unusually sleepy or not able to wake up, or is limp. Other Interactions
Instead of immediate release Xanax tablets of 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg and 2 mg tablets, extended release Xanax XR tablets of 0.5mg, 1mg, 2mg and 3mg can be used as well. Xanax is a benzodiazepine, so it may cause psychological addiction to this antianxiety agent. As with all antianxiety medication, there is a small chance that Xanax could encourage suicidal thoughts or episodes of euphoria known as mania.
It is not known if Xanax is safe and effective when used to treat panic disorder for longer than 10 weeks. Xanax® (alprazolam) is a medication that treats anxiety.
